Location

Glade Cottage is ideally located in the West Kootenay region, halfway between Nelson and Castlegar, near the banks of the Kootenay River.  The cottage is nestled on the western slopes of the Selkirk Mountains and must be accessed via a small ferry ride, giving it the feel of “island living.”  This setting affords the peacefulness of a small acreage community, while having great central access to the various centres and activities which abound in the West Kootenay region.

Glade Cottage is a 7 hour drive from southwest Calgary, and is best accessed via #3 south through the Crowsnest.  At Creston, you have the choice of taking the shorter route through the Kootenay Pass, or you may decide to take the more scenic but longer route via the Kootenay ferry from Crawford Bay to Balfour and then through Nelson.  This scenic route is also great during winter months when the Kootenay pass may be more difficult.

The central location of Glade Cottage means you can access Nelson in 20 minutes with its many shops, restaurants and heritage buildings.  Nelson also boasts a gorgeous lakeside park with a wonderful beach, shaded playground, and even a vintage streetcar to take the kids for a ride.  In winter, Nelson has great downhill skiing at the Whitewater ski area, (average annual snowfall of 40 feet), as well as numerous cross country ski venues all within 45 minutes of the cottage.

At Castlegar, you may head west for 45 minutes to the warm waters of Christina Lake. Alternatively, in winter you may end this drive at the 30 minute point and stop for the over 50 kms of groomed cross country ski trails of the Blueberry-Paulson area. More skiing is also available at Rossland which is accessed by heading south at Castlegar.

Only 45 minutes from the doorstep of Glade Cottage is the awesome Red Mountain with its’ great downhill skiing and cross country ski trails at the Black Jack ski area.  Start at the quaint hillside town of Rossland and cross-country ski on the lit trail out of town to the local country pub for a beer and then return to Rossland for a dinner at one of its fabulous restaurants.  Rossland also boasts some of the best mountain biking for the summer months.

Glade Cottage is also located within 1 hour of the Slocan and the quaint town of New Denver. Spend the day wandering the shops or hit the beach.  Driving 15 minutes south from Glade Cottage will take you to Castlegar where you may explore beaches and parks on the Arrow Lake and Columbia River.

Don’t feel like driving?  Just take a stroll out the front door of Glade Cottage down the trail on your 10 minute walk to the local beach or walk on the nearby trails beside the Kootenay River or the Glade waterfall.  You decide.
